Blue November: Men's health matters too.

Blue November: Men's health matters too.

By Pauline Machado

The Blue November Campaign reminds us that taking care of male health is also an act of responsibility and prevention . Just like females, males face significant risks throughout their lives, especially related to the prostate, urinary system, and behavior. Recognizing these risks and acting early makes all the difference in quality of life.

During this month, we reinforce the importance of neutering, preventive exams, and observing subtle signs that may indicate problems , because many families are still unaware that common diseases in males are silent and progress rapidly.

Therefore, we spoke exclusively with Veterinarian Aline Ferreira Rodrigues, Master in Veterinary Medicine and specialized in Veterinary Oncology, holder of CRMV/RJ – 11.582 , who gave us clarifications and guidance on how simple care can guarantee more health, comfort and longevity for them.

After reading, share the interview with your friends and family. Happy reading!

Pet Med - Why is Blue November also important for the health of male dogs?

Aline Ferreira Rodrigues During the Blue November campaign, it is possible to raise awareness among caregivers about how to identify certain signs that can save lives.

Pet Med - What are the main diseases that affect the prostate in dogs, and how do they impact the animal's daily life?

Aline Ferreira Rodrigues - The main diseases affecting the prostate in dogs include benign and malignant alterations. Among the benign alterations , we can mention benign prostatic hyperplasia, extremely common in middle to older dogs, in which, due to hormonal stimulation, the prostate increases in size, with orchiectomy (castration) being the treatment of choice.

Prostate abscesses are also relatively common conditions , and treatment is often based on the use of anti-inflammatory and antibiotic drugs.

Among the malignant alterations, we can mention prostate carcinoma, which is the main type of prostate cancer. The prostate can also be a source of metastasis for other types of cancer ; that is , when a cancer develops in another organ, but the malignant cells reach the prostate.

Pet Med  What signs should family members be aware of? Are you alert to the possibility of a prostate problem in your dog?

Aline Ferreira Rodrigues - Some signs may suggest prostatic changes, such as: difficulty defecating, ribbon-like stools, blood in the stool, difficulty urinating, and pain during bowel movements or urination. Some less specific signs may also occur, such as: prostration, decreased activity, and decreased food and water intake.

Pet Med - At what age should men begin preventive check-ups focused on their prostate?

Aline Ferreira Rodrigues - Clinical evaluation and check-up exams are recommended annually, starting at age 5 . The diagnosis of prostate abnormalities is made through physical examination and imaging tests, such as ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) scans .

Pet Med - Does castration really protect against prostate diseases?

Aline Ferreira Rodrigues - Neutering does not protect against prostate cancer; in fact , studies indicate a higher prevalence of the disease in neutered dogs. However, neutering offers several benefits, and it is the treatment of choice in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia, where the enlargement of the organ occurs due to testosterone stimulation, making it necessary to remove this stimulation.

Pet Med – What are the types of treatment for prostate cancer in men?

Aline Ferreira Rodrigues - Prostate cancer treatment is based on removal of the organ ( prostatectomy ), chemotherapy, and radiotherapy.

Pet Med - Why is adequate postoperative protection so essential in male surgeries, even the simplest ones?

Aline Ferreira Rodrigues - Proper care of any surgical wound is essential for adequate post-operative recovery. The animal must not have access to the stitches, as this risks damaging or even tearing them, causing serious problems and delaying healing time .

Pet Med - Like the Supreme Protective and Post-Surgical Garment from Pet Med Can it help with recovery after specific surgeries for males, such as castration or procedures in the abdominal region?

Aline Ferreira Rodrigues - The garment keeps the surgical wound protected, so the animal cannot lick it.

Pet Med - For how long should the dog wear the protective clothing after surgery, and what precautions should family members take during this period?

Aline Ferreira Rodrigues - The use of surgical clothing is recommended throughout the postoperative period , and the duration may vary according to veterinary medical advice, but on average between 10 and 14 days.

Pet Med  Finally, what message would you like to leave for families this Blue November to reinforce the importance of prevention and post-operative care?

Aline Ferreira Rodrigues - Pay close attention to the main signs, even the subtle ones, from your pet. If this happens, don't hesitate to seek veterinary medical help.
