Mariana Scheraiber - Animals in the post-operative period experience metabolic changes, which can increase their energy demand. Keeping this convalescence period as assisted as possible is important to optimize their recovery.
Pet Med - What are the main challenges faced by pet owners during surgical recovery?
Mariana Scheraiber - I believe the main challenges are related to the surgical wound, in addition to keeping the animal at rest. Depending on the type of surgery performed, the surgical wound may be larger or even involve more organ manipulation, which can cause discomfort and pain. Rest is paramount to prevent suture dehiscence, which could lead to a new surgical intervention.
Pet Med - How does nutrition influence recovery and healing after surgery?
Mariana Scheraiber - Since the animal will have increased energy demands, we must pay attention to nutrition. Studies show that most hospitalized patients are malnourished, and nutritional intervention helps even during the recovery period of convalescence. It is important that the nutritionist is aligned with the rest of the team in the hospital. Some nutrients are essential for wound healing, such as the amino acid arginine. Of course, each patient is unique, so we must precisely assess the real needs during a post-operative period, especially since we have different ways of feeding a hospitalized animal: parenteral, microenteral, and enteral nutrition.
Pet Med - When an animal doesn't want to eat, at what point does a feeding tube become a recommended option?
Mariana Scheraiber - We must always follow the technical guidelines from literature. Enteral tubes are essential to ensure that food reaches the animal's gastrointestinal tract. The animal's intestine is composed of cells that must be constantly nourished. In cases of fasting for around three days, enterocytes begin to die, and the intestinal barrier starts to lose efficiency.
Nasogastric tubes are indicated when animals have not eaten for 48 hours. These tubes can be inserted during hospitalization, and animals usually stay with them for a few days. Esophageal tubes, on the other hand, are highly recommended, especially for felines, as this species generally requires nutritional assistance for a longer period.
Pet Med - What differentiates the Pet Med tube from traditional tubes used in dogs and cats?
Mariana Scheraiber - By design and material type. Pet Med tubes are made of a more flexible material, which can be more comfortable for the animal. Additionally, their differentiated size and shape help to adjust the tube in the best way for the animal.

Mariana Scheraiber – Its use is recommended, especially, for animals that need to remain on nutritional support for longer and will use it at home. It's worth noting that when an animal receives an esophageal tube and can continue care at home, owners must receive guidance.
Pet Med - How to ensure the tube's use is safe and comfortable for the animal?
Mariana Scheraiber - It is important that the tube is protected so that the animal does not prematurely remove it and also avoids contamination.
Pet Med - What is the importance of the Pet Med ultralight collar in the recovery process?
Mariana Scheraiber – For many animals that cannot use a protective collar, only a bandage is used to protect the tube. As disadvantages, the bandage may not provide effective protection, and there is also the possibility of it tightening around the animal's neck. Additionally, the bandage can get dirty or even snag on something in the house, leading to premature removal of the tube and its protection.
In cats, esophageal tubes are widely used, so having a protective collar is essential to help protect the tube. Furthermore, the presence of the Velcro to adjust around the animal's neck makes it more comfortable.
Pet Med - Is there a specific diet recommended for the immediate postoperative period for dogs and cats?
Mariana Scheraiber - Depending on the surgery, some animals cannot receive complete food. For this, we have an enteral feeding modality called: microenteral. The microenteral food is not complete, but rather a mixture of amino acids and vitamins with physiological solution. It is administered orally and is important to nourish the enterocytes at this initial stage.
Afterwards, hypercaloric diets can be used, which are complete and balanced. These diets have a higher content of good proteins and fats so that the animal receives a smaller volume of food, thus aiding intestinal nutrition and not overloading the metabolism that is in convalescence.
Pet Med – Finally, what message would you give to families about the importance of care, patience, and comfort in the postoperative period for pets?
Mariana Scheraiber - Taking care of the animal is essential for it to have a quick and full recovery. Care, including wound cleaning, as well as well-established nutrition, is fundamental. In addition to all the care for the animal, having the follow-up of a Veterinary Doctor specializing in nutrition is essential to speed up and optimize the animal's recovery.
