Multispecies families: caring for family members and pets promotes longevity and quality of life for all.

Multispecies families: caring for family members and pets promotes longevity and quality of life for all.

By Pauline Machado

Much is said about the care we need to take with the health of dogs and cats, but it is important to emphasize that for some years now, the animals that live with us have been part of our lives, playing a very important role, and not just that of guarding, as in the case of dogs, or getting rid of rats, in the case of cats.

Today, the dogs and cats They are part of people's lives, their daily routines, and are considered family members, which gave rise to the concept of multi-species families – those in which humans live together in an integrated way with dogs, cats, birds, and others. In this configuration, animals are seen as family members, and caring for them is understood as part of family responsibilities.

We therefore need to keep in mind that when we neglect or postpone our self-care, we are more likely to get sick and, in some way, leave them vulnerable, since often there will be no other person or family member who can take care of our dogs and cats in our absence.

Therefore, Taking care of our own health is also very important, because when we take care of others and ourselves, we promote quality of life and longevity for everyone involved.

Considering these issues, I've detailed some important information for us to reflect on the impacts they have on our daily lives.

Follow along and share with your friends and family.

How caring for human health directly impacts the health of family pets.

When family members take care of their health, such as through healthy eating, physical exercise, and... check-ups Regular visits create a healthy and balanced environment for the animals as well. Human well-being is often reflected in the environment in which animals live, positively influencing their physical and emotional health.

On the other hand, when Family members neglecting their own health can lead to an inability to properly care for their pets, resulting in feeding, hygiene, and welfare problems for dogs and cats. Furthermore, owners with health issues may not be as active, negatively impacting the quality of life of animals that need regular exercise and stimulation.

How stress and emotional health of pet owners can affect the health of family pets.

Animals are very sensitive to their environment. If their owners are stressed, for example, this can affect the animals' behavior, making them more anxious or even aggressive.

The mental and emotional health of humans, therefore, directly influences the emotional health of pets, who can feel stress and react negatively, such as with changes in appetite or behavior.

People who experience periods of depression, anxiety, or stress, for example, can transmit these emotions to their animals. This can affect the pets' behavior, which may show signs of stress, such as aggression or apathy. On the other hand, an emotionally balanced owner tends to create a more harmonious environment for the animal.

Preventive health

Preventive care, such as check-ups Regular checkups, vaccinations, parasite control, and a healthy diet can improve the quality of life and longevity of both humans and their animals. By focusing on preventative healthcare, families ensure that both human family members and animals live longer and healthier lives, avoiding future problems that could compromise the well-being of both.

Benefits of having pets as a family

Keeping a pet can encourage family members to engage in physical activities such as walks, playtime, and outdoor games. This can lead to improved cardiovascular health, increased physical activity, and weight management. Furthermore, caring for pets can promote a more active lifestyle and prevent diseases related to a sedentary lifestyle.

Not to mention that pets offer companionship, unconditional affection, and emotional support, which can reduce stress and anxiety levels in human family members. Interaction with dogs and cats stimulates the production of hormones like oxytocin, which is associated with feelings of well-being and reduced emotional tension. The presence of animals also helps improve self-esteem and reduces feelings of loneliness.

Furthermore, including animals in family routines strengthens emotional bonds and creates shared responsibility among family members. Family dynamics tend to improve as family members begin to share responsibility and enjoy each other's company. It also teaches us about empathy, respect, and the importance of mutual care. Therefore, the presence of animals strengthens emotional bonds, promotes cooperation, and improves interaction among family members.

There is, in fact, Studies have shown that living with animals reduces cortisol levels , the stress hormone, in humans, while increasing the production of oxytocin, which promotes feelings of pleasure and relaxation. Therefore, I emphasize that the presence of a pet can help reduce anxiety, improve mood, and create a more peaceful and balanced environment at home.

And, to ensure that everyone lives together in a balanced and healthy way, it is essential that the human members of the family are responsible for the well-being of the animals, meeting their physical and emotional needs. Furthermore, it is important that the family knows how to establish clear limits and rules for the pets' behavior, as well as create a safe and suitable environment for everyone.

Finally, I want to emphasize how engaging with animals fosters a deep emotional connection, which benefits both animals and people, creating a more harmonious and healthy environment for everyone.
